It is with great sorrow we have learnt that after a near century of devoted service, to not only his community but his beloved nation, Major General Watson CBE has passed away.
Born in York in 1922, Henry Stuart Ramsay Watson lived a relatively normal life until he was called up for service at 19 saying, “I knew the call-up was inevitable”, Watson didn’t hesitate and served his nation gallantly. Watson was trained in an officer cadet training course and then commissioned in December 1942, into the 13th/18th Royal Hussars.
General Watson joined the new 19th Armoured Division in 1943 and began preparations for D-Day. During which, General Watson was tasked with getting his tanks onto Sword beach, a task that wouldn’t be easy. However, after a tough day of battle General Watson along with the rest of the combined ally forces had captured the beach, and later moved onto the city of Caen.
After the war, he continued his military career; most notably as Director of the NATO department of the defence policy staff. He was then promoted to Major General in 1975 for his finale appointment on the directing staff of Royal College of Defence Studies.
After his distinguished military career General Watson decided to serve his community. In 1989 he left the Royal College and became Deputy Director, and subsequently, Director of the Treasurer’s Department at Conservative Central Office. He later also became President of the Association for Aylesbury.
Major General Watson CBE died peacefully on August 14th, 2022, at aged 100. He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather, a warm and intelligent man who garnered respect and attention all over. His family are hosting a private funeral, but they are also hosting a service of thanksgiving on Friday 30th September at 2pm at St Dunstan’s, Monks Risborough, HP27 9JE. They ask you not to bring flowers, but donations will be accepted, if desired, to The Light Dragoons Charitable Trust, c/o Wright Funeral Services, 106 High Street, Great Missenden, Bucks, HP16 OBE; 01494 863101.
