The Hughenden Valley & Kingshill Branch have arranged a visit to Upton House & Gardens near Banbury, Banking for Victory - a Country House at War.
This new exhibition was opened to the punlic this year to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. In 1939 the owners of Upton House - the Bearsteds - moved out and thier family-owned bank moved in. Driven by the need to proect bank staff and assets from the London air raids, M. Samuel & Co. moved in lock, stock and barrel for the duration of the war. The historic Long Gallery was converted into a 1940's typing poll, and you will see how the bank staff lived and worked in their new surroundings. There are office desks and typewriters, just as there were in teh 1940's, alongside world class paintings and porcelain. New rooms are opne, and the gardensn are enhanced with wartime features.
