People sleeping rough on our streets is not what anyone wants to see. Every person sleeping rough, whatever their reasons for doing so, represents a personal tragedy which is why the Government have pledged to help eliminate rough sleeping in England by 2027. Aylesbury Vale District Council were awarded half a million pounds of Government funding for 2018-20 as part of this programme. The money is being used to facilitate a partnership working with local charities, Thames Valley Police and mental health & GP Services.
AVDC Cabinet Member Cllr Mark Winn recently joined Thames Valley Police on their early morning count at 3am to determine the number of people sleeping rough. Mark said, “The Council officers and partnership charities are undertaking some inspiring work including a package of care for each individual rough sleeper to help them deal with their often complex personal issues whether they occurred before or after they started sleeping on our streets. The goal is then to get each individual into housing, ending their cycle of homelessness.”
